Executive Summary

Fred Peña has over 40 years of combined airport, airline and aviation leadership experience. He has held various leadership positions with two major air carriers at airports in Hawaii and California. As a station manager he represented his company’s interests and managed their operations; administered multi-disciplined staff, contractors and vendors; and ensured compliance with all federal, state and local regulations.

As the Superintendent of Airport Operations at Long Beach Airport, Peña is responsible for day-to-day operations including airfield safety, maintenance, facilities and capital projects. His customer service experience enables him to successfully interact with airport users, tenants, internal divisions and external organizations to ensure successful business outcomes. In addition, Peña has a track record of ensuring airport staff, facilities and equipment are prepared and provisioned to deal with emergencies or natural disasters.

Peña has produced and distributed new airport documents and manuals such as a signage plan, helicopter pilot guides, inspection checklists and emergency plans. He has worked with city engineering and construction groups to ensure capital improvement projects were completed safely and on schedule. His hands-on approach resulted in Long Beach Airport receiving its first ever “No Findings” determination from the FAA during its annual certification inspection in 2008.

Peña is also an FAA-certified private pilot, flight attendant and airport security coordinator.

Airport Operations Superintendent

  • Oversee day-to-day activities of the airport, including interaction with federal, state and local agencies; major tenants, airport users and air carriers; contractors and other city staff.
  • Implemented a Ramp Safety Committee to increase safety awareness and accident prevention.
  • Developed and administered the activities of subordinates and staff to ensure the airport’s compliance with all regulatory requirements, city ordinances, policies and directives.
  • Provided technical assistance and guidance for the airport capital improvement programs and various airfield maintenance and repair projects.
  • Ensured operational compliance with FAA airport certification standards.

Alaska Airlines, Burbank, Long Beach and Orange County, California

  • Managed administrative, operational and customer service functions at various stations to ensure successful on-time schedule reliability, budget performance and customer relations.
  • Served as project manager for opening of new stations throughout California, Arizona and Mexico, overseeing facilities, new hire and employee training.
  • Served as primary company representative throughout initial search, recovery and family assistance activities following the crash of Alaska Airlines flight 261.

Canadian Pacific Airlines, Honolulu, Hawaii and Los Angeles, California

  • Oversaw staff performing customer service and operations functions including passenger ticketing, departure and arrival handling, in-flight catering, baggage services and special service requests, aircraft dispatching and staff training.
  • Responsible for interaction with airport staff, contractors and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Services personnel responsible for clearances of passengers and airfreight.
